Born in Tel Aviv in 1951. Ron Arad began his studies at the Jerusalem Academy of Art in 1971. He then moved to London in 1973, where he attended the Architectural Association. In 1981, he founded One Off with Caroline Thorman, a way of promoting not only his own work but also that of other avant-garde British designers. In 1989, he founded Ron Arad Associates, an architectural and design office, with Alison Brooks and Caroline Thorman, followed in 1994 by the Ron Arad Studio in Como, Italy. In 1994, he also started teaching at the Hochschule in Vienna and the Royal College of Art in London. Ron Arad’s work centres mainly on furniture and product design and features a virtuoso application of sheet steel, which he skilfully moulds into sinuous shapes and lines that are seemingly in constant movement. He has received international recognition for his work (“Designer of the Year”, 1994), which started off far removed from the concept of mass production but has since attracted the interest of renowned manufacturers such as Vitra, Moroso, Kartell, FIAM, Driade, Alessi and FLOS. His architectural projects include the Maserati Headquarters Showroom in Italy, a living room and family dining room for Sheikh Saud Al-Thani’s Villa in Qatar, the Selfridges Technology Hall in London, the Tel Aviv Opera Foyer in Israel and the Belgo Noord and Belgo Centraal restaurants in London. His designs are in the permanent collections of several museums.

Ron Arad's constant experimentation with the possibilities of materials such as steel, aluminium or polyamide and his radical re-conception of the form and structure of furniture has put him at the forefront of contemporary design and architecture. Educated at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and later at the Architectural Association in London, he went on to co-found Ron Arad Associates, Ron Arad Architects and the Ron Arad Studio, design and production unit in Como, Italy. He was Professor of Design Product at the Royal College of Art in London up until 2009, and in 2011 was awarded the London Design Week Medal for design excellence, in 2013 he became a Royal Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts. He appears in conversation with writer and editorial consultant David Michon to discuss his career and work, where experience has brought him and the future projects he is most excited about now, including his most recent artwork, using a new light source, OLED light and LG Display OLED light panels.
