The Serie 7 Monochrome Chair was created by Arne Jacobsen for the Danish furniture label Fritz Hansen and its a superb piece of modern seating design.

Hansen's products are characterised by the elegant use of wood to create sensuous shapes and comfortable forms. One of the finest chair-makers in Europe, Fritz Hansenare always on the cutting edge of carpentry design, but they also stock timeless masterpieces like the Serie 7 Monochrome Chair.

This chair was created by Jacobsen in the 1950s, as the demand for stackable office chairs grew. Organisations that wanted practical seats that nonetheless had visual flair reached out to designers lie Jacobsen, who were masters in working with Scandinavian hardwoods.

In this case, Jacobsen used slender steel piping to reinforce a sculpted wooden frame - resulting in a delicate, almost flower-like design that is actually extremely durable and strong. Plenty of these chairs can be stacked on top of each other, without damaging their graceful form in the slightest. That's what makes them such a design classic. Despite being over 60 years old, few chairs have come close to bettering the classic design of the Serie 7 Monochrome Chair.
